Ultra compression refers to a method of alleviating the pain among patients who have sprained their ankle. Every sprain is essentially a case of torn ligaments or ligaments that have been stretched beyond their threshold. Ligaments play a critical role in controlling and assisting the mobility of a joint and its ability to bear the body-weight. Hence, when the strength of a ligament is compromised, the pain surfaces in the form of a strain. Ankle sprains are perhaps the commonest form of bodily sprains among people. The reason lies in the daily usage of the ankle joint among most people, making it increasingly vulnerable to wear and tear or a sprain owing to repeated usage. Further, most people are unaware about their stepping or running techniques which might be indirectly hurting their ankles. Not many people realize that some basic exercises should be done periodically to normalize a stretched ankle ligament and prevent it from getting sprained.

While ankle sprains involving a slight pain or a small twist of the ankle can be healed with simple home-remedies like a combination of icepacks and some over-the-counter medications, sprains that involve a serious rupturing of the ligament can be very painful and need a more holistic, treatment approach. Before the medical treatment approach is chosen for a sprained ankle, it is vital to understand the extent of the damage. There are various symptoms of a seriously-sprained ankle and these can present themselves as individual signs listed below or in the form of any combination from this list:

Severe pain in and around the ankle

Numbness in the entire foot, often extending beyond the knee

Inability to rest body-weight on the sprained ankle

Inability to walk or even stand-up for a few moments

Localized tenderness around the ankle

Inflammation with marked swelling

Varying degrees of stiffness in the affected leg

It should be understood that each of these symptoms and the overall severity of the sprained ankle depends upon the extent of damage that the ligament has undergone. It is often seen that if the ligament isn't torn but only stretched, patients with excruciating pain too have completely recovery within one or two weeks without undertaking any particular physical therapy. Such conditions resolve with rest and the use of some basic, pain-killers. However, if the degree of ligament tear is severe, the recuperation can be lengthy and demanding.
